Sure, we know the fun Zacchaeus song and the sycamore tree climbing fame, but why else should we share the story of this short tax collector? The tale of Zacchaeus is an important one to share with children as we emphasize the love of Jesus and the constant availability of grace. We see through this classic story that meeting Christ changes lives, and we also communicate to kids that we want to love other people as well, whoever they might be.

Lesson focus: Jesus loved all kinds of people, and often associated with those that others did not like so much. He changed lives by this love and transformed how people felt and behaved. Jesus offered mercy and forgiveness, and because of that we should demonstrate unconditional love to one another.  Jesus changes us, and we can change others. In our own power, we are not capable of heart transformation. We don’t somehow work up enough strength to alter our attitudes, but when we know that we have Christ in our lives, we recognize that anything is possible. His death and resurrection give us new life. As a result, we should naturally want to help others and tell them about the life-changing ability of our Lord.

A great help

My church works with the Revised Lectionary and so these weekly freebies are so wonderful, as the Sunday School lesson can fit in with the Sermon. We made trees and little Zaccheus figures, and some even had Jesus puppets walking underneath to call Zaccheus down. Our group of 3-8 year olds didn't need the bank idea this time, but maybe in the future. I am looking forward to use these weekly resources into the future. It is great that they are freebies because buying a curriculum for less than 10 children isn't sustainable.
