God Is Faithful Object Lesson for Kids: It Started with One
This 5-minute object lesson comes straight from the free Week 1 lesson. Supplies: 1 cup of dry rice in a clear cup, a bowl, and a dark plate or saucer. Before class: set the cup of rice, the empty bowl and the dark plate on a table the whole class can stand around.
(Gather the class in a standing horseshoe at the table.) Look at this cup. It's full of rice. Tiny grains. More than I could ever count. Watch and listen.
(Pour the rice slowly into the bowl.) God promised Abraham a family as many as the stars. Hear all that rice? That's a lot of family. But here's the thing. Abraham and his wife Sarah didn't have that big family. They didn't have even one child. They waited, and they waited.
(Pick out one grain and set it alone on the dark plate.) Now look close. See it? One grain, all by itself.
(Carry the plate slowly along the horseshoe, past every child.) It started with one baby: Isaac. Right on time. God didn't start with the whole bowl. He started with one. Then the family kept growing, just like God said.
Let's say it together: God is faithful: He always keeps His promises, even when His people have to wait a long time.
Jesus was born into that family too, God's biggest promise kept.
Attributes of God Discussion Questions for Kids (Week 1)
After the Bible story, circle up and ask the three "Look Closer" questions from the lesson:
- Abraham and Sarah waited and waited. What did God do for them? (He gave them a son, Isaac, at the very time He promised.)
- They waited so long, and still the baby came. What does that tell us about God? (A long wait never means God forgot; He is never late.)
- God's biggest promise came true in Jesus. And His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, helps us trust God while we wait. What hard thing can you tell God about this week?
