When teaching children, this Bible story can be challenging. The rich man and Lazarus can be including imagery of after-life torment. While hell is biblical, but the point is not to frighten listeners or confuse young children. We suggest focusing on the larger point Jesus’ was making about compassion. Rich people will be accountable to God, especially when they ignore the suffering of their neighbors. We want to emphasize the importance of putting God first in our lives and being open handed toward others who are in need. Ultimately, those who follow Jesus will escape judgement, but we must also pay careful attention to what Jesus says about the danger of being rich. God calls his people to show mercy and fight against suffering in this life by serving the poor.

Lesson focus: God should be the most important part of our lives. When we let other things get in the way or distract us, we often wind up confused and disappointed. We can miss opportunities to help others who are suffering. We should continue to pray and re-focus our hearts on the Lord.
